Before that they have lived in villages or small towns by the sea or in the mountains. This is why it is not unusual to hear even young children who they have lived in cities all their lives are talking about 'their village'. What they mean is the place where their parents were grew up or previous generations of their family lived. Even today although 'the village' is an important part of the lives of the majority of people who now make their living in cities.
